And what do those things mean?

I guess if I were to loosely define them it would be like this.
High Quality of Life: Days that I enjoy living. Seeing my family frequently. Hanging out with friends. Doing meaningful work. Being Creative.

Low Standard of Living: Living well within my means. Being satisfied with what I already have. Growing some of my own foods and herbs. Making things for my family. Not contributing to the capitalistic/consumer American "dream". Teaching my children that there is MUCH more to life than stuff.

And while those things are all well and good, how do you achieve these things? I can't just quit my job without affecting our financial status, which would really affect our ability to do some of the quality things we enjoy. Like traveling to see family. I don't have the time to cultivate some of the habits and talents that I wish I could due to our time constraints. I have my priorities and we focus on not stressing a lot in our house.

While there are a lot of fun things we could do that would keep us busy (and I sometimes miss those things) I am really enjoying placing a priority on staying home and living a very quiet life. So far... SO good.
Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-54946763599186056732011-05-11T08:18:00.000-07:002011-05-11T08:21:24.972-07:00The Wheels on the Bus...
Every morning I get up, throw some clothes on, brush my hair (if my coworkers are lucky), slip on a pair of shoes and go wait for the bus.

When I was a kid, I really didn't look forward to riding the bus to school. And in high school that was just out of the question. I'm not sure why I felt that way, but I don't like buses. Unless they were taking all of us on a cool field trip.

These days, as we are carless, our transportation is limited to these:

We walk to church.
We walk to 3 different grocery stores.
We walk to restaurants to go out to eat.
We walk just to walk some days.

For everything else there's the bus.
We ride it to work and back
We ride it to visit friends and family.
We ride it to various stores that are too far away for walking.
We ride it to the farmer's market.

These forms of transportation make me feel very urban and green. I'm using a public service and a god given ability instead of spending up to $4/gallon on gas. My wallet is really appreciating it. Some arguments against public transportation is that it's not convenient. It's smelly and there are weird people riding it. It comes at odd times and it's faster to just drive where you're going.
I can use the combination of walking and the bus system to get me almost anywhere. Sometimes there are less than desirable people on the bus, but you can find that everywhere too. Any inconvenience can be handled by good planning and timing.
Riding the bus is saving me hundreds of dollars a month. Making me(and my wallet) a little greener.
Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-57060421240681585102011-04-25T10:05:00.000-07:002011-04-25T10:05:58.025-07:00Green Thumbprint
I purchased tiny little herb starter pots at Target for a dollar each. I wrote about them here.

But over the last week I've been carefully watching them for progress and.... voila! I have some green growth as of Friday that looked like this:

If you look VERY carefully you can see the tiny tiny sprouts.

And after our short day and a half away... they look like this!
And I am loving it! The prices for the majority of the organic foods are about where they usually are, but the non-organic produce (I'm really not that picky.) is super well priced usually. Also they have some lovely baguettes for only a dollar!

But the point of all of this is to say that yesterday we walked to the Market, picked up some ingredients, went home and easily tossed together a very tasty salad. Plus of course the obligatory hunk of fresh baguette. Delicious!

I really am loving the weather that is allowing me to enjoy walking instead of enduring it.
Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-30203389237464546632011-03-29T08:15:00.000-07:002011-03-29T08:15:22.878-07:00CSA
I've been thinking more and more about where we get our vegetables.
There's a new Sunflower Market just down the street, and they have great produce. But as a kid growing up, my family had a HUGE garden. That I hated. I hate weeding. I dislike pickles and tomatoes and mushrooms and lots of things. Not because they're particularly nasty... I'm pretty sure it's just a lingering fear of really hard work in the hot hot Texas sun.
So I've been wishing I didn't live on the second floor... and have zero room to grow plants with very little daylight. However... I've been toying with the idea of a gutter garden/planter boxes. Maybe some herbs...

Okay. Back to reality now. We spend quite a bit of our monthly budget on food in this little household so I've been thinking more about CSA's. I know there are quite a few options in our area. I just have to pick one. I also have to remember that it's worth it.

Because I really do prefer super fresh veggies to store bought. They just ARE better.
Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-49474584181905431052011-02-14T13:22:00.000-08:002011-02-14T13:22:49.179-08:00Eating Local
So for Valentine's Day on Saturday (I know it's today, but the weekend is more convenient, dangit!) Peter and I decided to do the traditional standby of dinner and a movie. If you want to read about the whole thing, go here.
But as this is all about buying responsibly... I'm going to talk a bit more about the restaurant we chose.
The Copper Onion.
Now I've been dying to go ever since I saw it almost a year ago. And whether it was because of time, travel, $, or just plain forgetfulness we hadn't gone yet. And we eat out. A lot.
The restaurant is nestled in downtown Salt Lake. It's right next to a theater, a parking garage, and in the bottom of a business tower. With all that around it, they've still created an extremely homey and inviting ambiance.
I'm thinking we're going to have to go back and actually sample the dinner menu, as we were there for brunch. But the thing I'm actually trying to get to is this.
Their restaurant is not a chain. It's local. It is a small business and a small restaurant. It is supporting people here in my town and I really like that in a restaurant.
I also like that they tell you where they get most of their product. When they can they have locally sourced whole foods. They support local farmers and producers.
It is a little more expensive. The portions aren't huge and that helped us eat responsibly. We didn't need to eat our weight in pasta. Though I would have liked to!
Here's a review with some photos from a local food blog...
And next time we need a nice place to eat out... This is it.

Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-30675845610446104832011-02-08T09:59:00.000-08:002011-02-08T09:59:14.597-08:00Tapped out
Last night we watched Tapped. It's a documentary about bottled water. About how awful it is for the economy. How it's a terrible use of resources. And it's less healthy than tap water. In fact it IS tap water, but with the added leached cancer causing petrochemicals from the bottles. Styrene and BPA and all sorts of other crap. I already don't buy bottled water, because it's ridiculously expensive. Which, the movie points out a number of times. It's healthier and more economical to use the regulated municipal sources which you already pay for.
This just makes me think about how many other things that we buy packaged for convenience sake that we already have available for free.
Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-17348089169677660872011-01-27T15:00:00.000-08:002011-01-27T15:00:08.076-08:00Heat Conservation
Exercise, Cuddle, sleep with lots of blankets, warm and comfy pajamas, hot soup, fresh baked goods, hot chocolate.
Why don't more people say this? Usually the phrase is something more like, "I'm gonna jump in the shower." or, "I just wanna take a quick shower, I'll be fast." I suppose that showers are a bit speedier, but are we really saving that much time? I mean, unless you're really only spending 5 minutes in the shower, you're probably dumping enough water down the drain to fill 2 bathtubs, maybe more.

I typically spend about 20 minutes-ish in the shower. I decided this morning that, since I had the time, I wanted to take a bath. I realized that I maybe spent about 10 more minutes in the tub than I do in the shower... mostly because soaking in a bath is AMAZING.

Many people may argue that it takes too long to fill up the tub. Sillies. All you have to do is start filling the tub BEFORE you gather whatever else you need for the bath. For those of you who think that sitting in a tub is gross, you are m.i.s.s.i.n.g o.u.t. If you really have a problem with it, run the shower for a minute when you're ready to get out.

I'm telling you, baths are the way to go!

Take a Bath. The whole trip took less than an hour and 15 minutes, including waiting for the bus. We only picked up enough groceries for the week (how much we can carry...) and we did it quickly and efficiently! I like buying whole food. Ingredients. It makes me feel magical, transforming ingredients into meals.
Saving money makes me feel magical too. :)Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-52144908168966750392011-01-03T15:28:00.000-08:002011-01-03T15:28:04.175-08:00Purchasing FreshI went shopping while recovering from the holiday madness, and I was amazed at how easily I picked up the fresh veggies I was craving. That's right. Craving!!! I don't usually crave veggies, but the bright colors seduced me into buying almost nothing else.
And while I'm proud of myself for buy vegetables instead of processed food, I find myself wishing I really could buy fresh food. Not food that had been shipped and picked days and days ago. But living here in Utah with my limited resources, at the moment... this is the best I can do. And right now, I'm looking forward to dinner. :)Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-20343904093375635992010-12-30T10:03:00.000-08:002010-12-30T10:03:07.549-08:00New YearIt's a New Year, and with that come resolutions. I'm thinking that I'd like to be more conscious. I'd like to just be aware more often. To notice things. Yeah, I'd like that.
I spend too much time worrying and planning for what I think is happening. Not what actually happens/ed.
So rather than worry about weight or health or finances, I'm just going to try to notice stuff.Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-4573794980052784222010-12-20T05:41:00.000-08:002010-12-20T05:41:51.781-08:00Headed down South...We're going home. Well, I am.And I'm probably not going to take the greenest route either...
Another four hour car ride and we'll be done traveling until next monday. I wish it were spring and all the world was green, but I'm so glad it's Christmas time!! Yay!Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-53486090934931940442010-12-17T08:33:00.000-08:002010-12-17T08:33:59.257-08:00Flying to VAWe're leaving tomorrow and the only thing I've assembled are the presents we're taking with us. So tonight I have to deal with the challenge of trying to fit everything we need + Christmas into two carry on bags. Well, technically four. But I don't want to check bags, because it's too expensive, and its easier to not lose stuff if I'm responsible for it. Right? right. So the challenge: What can I live without for 10 days?Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-3958376552895583062010-12-16T09:38:00.000-08:002010-12-16T11:48:43.168-08:00The Tech TrendsI'm convincing myself today that I don't want an iPod Touch with a camera or an iPad. I keep seeing them everywhere in giveaways, on sale in shop windows, and in the hands of coworkers. That last one might be the hardest. They're so shiny! I happen to love Apple products for their design. I know next to nothing about the inner workings, but I know that the outer workings "make my skirt fly up" as Pioneer Woman would say.
But today I'm reminding myself that the things (phone and iPod Touch and desktop) I already have still work. I don't need more. I might still want more... but it can wait. I can wait.

Also: I'm loving this look for decorations. Simple is a good goal.Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5775731161768073548.post-47906592627128221282010-12-15T15:11:00.000-08:002010-12-15T15:11:08.203-08:00Being GreenerOver the last six months I've been working on making my lifestyle fit my budget. I'm getting rid of things I don't need. Cleaning out my closet. Eating healthier and spending less. I'm no Eco friendly vegan granola hippie by any stretch. I love myBig Macs and Texas Cheese Fries. I love hulu, Netflix, and most things tech. I love new clothes and shoes. I'm just trying to be smarter and a little greener about the way I'm consuming.
Hopefully this new blog will both document and encourage our progress on our way to being Greener Consumers.Briannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14870324742579090665noreply@blogger.com0
